If you enjoy getting out for a drive and exploring small towns along the way, Carroll County offers some of the most relaxing scenic routes in Northwest Illinois. Rolling farmland, river bluffs, historic towns, and quiet back roads make it a great destination for a day trip.
Here are a few scenic drives worth adding to your list.
One of the most popular routes in the county is the drive between Mount Carroll and Savanna. Starting in Mount Carroll, visitors can walk the historic courthouse square before heading west through farmland and wooded areas toward the Mississippi River.
Once you reach Savanna, take time to walk along the riverfront and explore the downtown area. Several local restaurants and shops make it easy to spend the afternoon enjoying the town.
Just north of Savanna, Mississippi Palisades State Park offers some of the most impressive views in the region. The park features hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and picnic areas overlooking the Mississippi River.
Visitors often combine a stop at the park with lunch or shopping in Savanna before continuing their drive through the county.
Driving east from Mount Carroll toward Lanark offers a quieter route through farmland and small communities. Lanark provides a peaceful stop along the way and a chance to experience another Carroll County town.
The drive between Lanark and Shannon is another relaxing stretch of road surrounded by farmland and open countryside.
The best way to explore Carroll County is simply to slow down and enjoy the drive. Stop in towns along the way, visit local businesses, and take in the scenery.
